Now if you haven't seen 1st Impression, you really need to. Not only are they very entertaining, but are one of the best live sounding bands. This is all due to Bill Kopcho, their sound engineer. Every time i've seen them, they've always had a tight sound. At Mixers and the Hawkeye Tap, i stood right in front of their p.a. speakers and watched them play a couple of sets. They were at the right loudness for the bar, and you could still stand in front of the speakers and not get blown away. If i had anything negative to say about their sound, it's that their guitar solo's needed a little more boost. When i see a band live, i like to hear every note in every solo crystal clear. While you could hear Matt and Lyle o.k., a little more boost would've made them sound perfect. But this is coming from a guitar player. 1st Impression also have a very good light show, complete with fog.

Now much like Mark from Tripod, Becky is a perfect frontman, (or should i say frontwoman), for the band. Becky really gets the crowd going, whether it's doing shots that the fans have bought her, or passing out beads, or banging her tamborine, you can tell she's having a good time. I remember the first time i went to see them at the Racers Edge last fall, knowing they had a female singer, i was expecting to hear a lot of songs by female artists. I figured they'd probably play stuff by Pat Benatar, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Joan Jett, or whatever. Boy, was i wrong. The one thing you can say about Becky, is she rocks! She tackles songs by AC/DC, Def Leppard, Nickelback, Twisted Sister, and belts them out better than any male singer i've seen. In fact i think the only female artist's i think i've seen them cover is No Doubts "Hella Good", and the Four Non Blondes "Whats Going On". While some bands with a female singer might stray from songs like Nickelbacks "Figured You Out", not Becky. She knows how to work the crowd, and put on a show. Thats why 1st Impression has probably the biggest following of any band i've seen.

1st Impressions songlist is a good mixture of dance songs, and flat out rockers. They'll pack the dance floor with songs like Head East's "Never Been Any Reason, Cheap Tricks "I Want You To Want Me", or Georgia Satellites "Keep Your Hands To Yourself". They'll please the rockers with songs like Montrose's "Bad Motor Scooter", Brother Canes "Got No Shame", or Twisted Sisters "We're Not Gonna Take It". My favorite song by them is their cover of Candlebox's "Far Behind". Other song highlights include, Def Leppards "Pour Some Sugar On Me", 3 Doors Down's "When I'm Gone", Collective Soul's "Shine", Nickelback's "Never Again", and more. The band has been around long enough that they probably know enough songs that their playlist can change from night to night. - John Pepping, Rock Beat #4

Comments

"I know these guys and gal have been around for a long time, and I know everyone realizes that they f#cking rock, but I had almost forgotten how much until seeing them at Racer's Edge Saturday night. Doesn't matter what song it is, even the standard dance songs that I heard earlier in the evening from other bands, Becki was able to give them new life and energy. Made me want to stick around for the next one. Their originals have come together nicely and you can tell the whole band is happy to be there, doing what they do. Becki's interaction with the crowd on and off stage is what true "rock stars" are made of - and always with a smile." - PodCandy
