Last Saturday marked the significant return of one of the area's most entertaining bands, Mr. Tripod. Mr. Tripod is a band that features: Mark Schrupp - lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Mitch Bergeson- lead guitar, vocals, Matt Balzer- bass, vocals, and Joey Cafer- drums, vocals. Tripod was on hiatus since the first of the year, while Mark finished school. Saturday night was there first gig together again for some time. This took place at the newly remodeled Wagon Wheel in Bettendorf. Guns For Hire would have been there, but we were playing in Cambridge that night. I've only gotten to see Mr. Tripod one time, last fall at Mixers. What i saw that night was one of the most entertaining bands i think i've ever seen in a club. This was mostly due to Mr. Mark Schrupp.
While the rest of the Pod is filled with talented musicians who have been in the local music scene for a long time, it was Mark who really stuck out. Mark does what a frontman is supposed to do, put on a show and entertain. While the focus of the whole night seem to center around Mark, not once did i feel it took anything away from the rest of the band. Each member shared the spotlight, it's been awhile but i seem to remember Matt singing Van Halen's "Right Now" and doing a great job. Now i've seen other local bands try to tell jokes on stage, and have to stop and think about the next line or punchline, and in the end just seems like their wasting time. I think most bands should just forget the jokes and just play. In Marks case though, the jokes were short and quick, and delivered the way they were meant to be. The best part of the night,(besides the music) was Mark's impersonation of Ozzy Osbourne and Elvis Presley.
I can't remember the last time I laughed so much watching a band play. While the bands playlist featured a couple of songs that were not exactly my cup of tea, i give them props for playing them well. I've seen a couple of bands try to play Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music", but Tripod's version was excellent. Actually i think they did a medley that featured "Play That Funky Music, "Brickhouse", something i don't remember, and they ended it with Kid Rocks "Bawitdaba". Other song highlights included Ozzy's "Mr. Crowley", Ted Nugent's "Great White Buffalo", Def Leppard's "Wasted" and Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man". - John Pepping, Rock Beat #3

On August 12th i ventured out to Milan for another show of the Cover Band Hell Tour. This took place at Skate More And Receptions and featured, Third Rail, Mr. Tripod, and Kings Kiss. Once again it was another killer show by all three bands. The crowd was a little on the light side which i don't understand. For only three dollars you got to see three rockin' bands, thats only one dollar a band. You can't beat that. People just don't know what they are missing. Kings Kiss puts on one of the best live shows i've ever seen by a local band. Mr. Tripod is right behind Kings Kiss as far as entertaing a crowd, no matter how many people they are playing too. Extra kudo's goes out to Third Rail for playing from 7:30 to 8:30 in Milan, then heading over to the Purgatory Pub to play the rest of the night there. I bet you guys and gal were exhausted by 2 a.m. Just goes to show how much it means to be part of a Kings Kiss show! I know Guns For Hire has enjoyed playing with Kings Kiss.
